for beginners.

Salsa is one of the most popular dance styles in the Latin culture.
Learning how to dance Salsa starts with getting used and familiar with the
Salsa beat which is usually a 4/4 rhythm. You can identify the 2 sets of 4
beat rhythms by counting the beats. The usual pattern when dancing Salsa
involves pausing on the fourth beat after 3 steps and shifting your weight
from one foot to the other whenever there’s a skipped beat.

The basic steps of Salsa are made up of different combinations of
alternating forward and backward steps both in closed and open positions.
Dancing Salsa is all about steps and counts, so anyone who can count to 8
can actually learn how to dance Salsa. There is what they call a Quick and
Slow count. The right foot of both partners will break back and their left foot
will break forward with the “Quick-Quick Slow, Quick-Quick Slow” count.
This basic step can be done without having to turn or do a 1/4 turn to the
left with each measure. The closing step can be the “Slow” count.

Once you are comfortable and familiar with the counting and the basic
steps of Salsa dancing, then you are now ready to do the 7 fundamental
Salsa steps. If you are the lady, first you will have to step your left foot
forward at the first count. Then proceed with your right foot taking the place
of your left on the second count and by the third count you should have
your left foot back to the middle. At the fourth count is where you pause, or
you can tap your right foot. After which all you need to is to repeat your first
set of movement for the remaining counts 5, 6, and 7. Just don’t forget to
shift your weight whenever your make your steps. For the men which is
usually the partner, all he has to do is to follow the lady’s basic steps but
this time he has to start with his left foot.

As you can see learning how to dance Salsa is not that difficult. With
constant practice and further lessons you and your partner can learn more
complex steps and execute your steps perfectly.
